Planning Your Ceremony & Reception Music
Ceremony Music
When you close your eyes and imagine your walk down the aisle, what do you hear? Is the room filled with the brilliant sounds of a large pipe organ, or perhaps the soft sounds a string quartet? Maybe you imagine getting married to contemporary tunes with lyrics expressing your feelings.

Choosing the music for your wedding can be a bit intimidating. After all, there are no rules concerning which music is played at a wedding. The easiest way to get started is to think about the mood you are trying to set for you and your guests at different times during the ceremony.

Select each item below to review popular traditional and contemporary choices for your ceremony music.

  • Prelude
The Prelude is an interval of music starting 20 to 30 minutes prior to your ceremony. Your Prelude music establishes the tone for your wedding.
  • Processional
The processional is the entrance of the wedding party. You'll want to select beautiful and grand music, while still saving the best for your entrance!
  • Interlude/Unity Candle
The Interlude/Unity Candle takes place during the ceremony. The music is played in the background and should set the tone for, not over-power, the unity candle lighting or other rituals.
  • Recessional
The recessional music is played after your kiss and carries you and your wedding party as you leave the altar. It should be similar in style to the processional music, but a little more upbeat with a "happy" sound.

A note of caution: Some churches will not allow secular music to be played. Your church organist or wedding officiate should be able to explain any restrictions.

Thoughts on Your "Organized" Dances
Many modern brides and grooms want to include the traditional dances during their reception, also don't want to force their guests to sit idle while these are going on. Here are some ideas to keep the party moving while still enjoying this tradition:

  • Have your first dance with your groom as soon you make your Grand Entrance into the room with your groom! The DJ will MC this and ALL eyes will be you!
  • Consider doing the father/bride and mother/groom dances between courses if you are having a sit-down meal reception. Your DJ or band leader will MC the dances for you.
  • Some of the popular songs for these dances are 4-5 minutes long and can seem long and drawn out. Consider having your DJ fade out the song after a couple of minutes so you can move on to the next. You'll still enjoy the private moment of the dance, and it will cut down the time your guests are sitting idle.
  • After dinner, start with the wedding party dance and an upbeat tune. About a minute into the song, send your wedding party into the audience to grab the hand of guest and bring them up to dance. This gets the party going and gets the guests on the floor!
